Elmira Bulldogs General Manager James R. Schutz is pleased to announce that Telron Spell (23.1 ppg) and Henri Bufrod (14.8 ppg) will be returning to the Elmira Bulldogs for the 2009-2010 season.  These player transactions now bring's the Elmira Bulldogs 2009-2010 roster up to a total of 9 player's.  The team is currently working on securing one more star player for the 2009-2010 final roster.

Spell has dominated on every team he has ever been on.  While in college at NCAA D-2 power house University of Bridgeport he led the team in scoring his junior and senior season's while averaging 17.1 points per game.  In 2008 he averaged 30.0 points per contest for the Westchester Monarchs of the National Professional Basketball League (NPBL), Spell went on to be named 1st team all NPBL and was selected to the NPBL North All-Star team.  Spell was a major factor in the Elmira Bulldogs reaching the 2009 Eastern Basketball Alliance (EBA) Championship Game as last season he averaged 23.1 points per game just a tenth of a point shy off the average of Aubin Scott (23.2 ppg) who was named the 2009 EBA league MVP.

Buford was the Elmira Bulldogs 6th man last season and provided a huge scoring punch off the bench.  Henri Buford finished last season as the 3rd leading scorer on the Elmira Bulldogs at 14.8 ppg despite coming off the bench.

This means that with League MVP Aubin Scott returning (Aubin Scott was announced at the July 30th press conference from First Arena) that the Elmira Bulldogs now return all 3 of the team's top scorers from last season's team that reached the EBA Championship game.  In total, the Elmira Bulldogs now have 7 of last seasons 10 player's returning for the 2009-2010 season.   In addition to the returners the Elmira Bulldogs have also added Brian Jackson and Darnell Jackson to the team.  Brian Jackson was the starting point guard at NAIA Division 1 Mountain State University where he led them to the sweet 16 and elite 8.  Darnell Jackson is a former Division 2 2nd-team all-american from Daemen College where he was also named conference player of the year.  Darnell Jackson has played professionaly over-seas for Roma Saint Vincent's in the Irish Super League where he averaged 17.9 points per game.

"We have brought back the top player's from a team that reached the championship game, we have added two player's who could end up being the best player's on the entire team", stated Bulldogs General Manager James R. Schutz.  "I think it's safe to say we are planning on making some noise during the 2009-2010 season".

At a press conference held on Thursday July 30th at 1:00pm inside First Arena the Elmira Bulldogs announced the signing of seven players.  In addition the team announced that South Side High School will also host home games for the Elmira Bulldogs as well as First Arena.

Aubin Scott - 6'2" Shooting Guard, West Hempstead, NY, Long Island University (LIU).

Aubin is the reigning 2009 EBA League MVP after helping lead the Elmira Bulldogs to the 2009 EBA championship game with season averages of 23.2 points per game, 5.2 assists per game, 5.8 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game.  Prior to joining the Elmira Bulldogs Aubin was a star player at NCAA D-1 Long Island University where he posted averages of 9.7 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game.

Coaches Comment - Aubin is a true MVP in every sense of the word.  He not only led our team in scoring but he also led the team in assists and I think that speaks volumes about his character.  Throw in the fact that at just 6'2" he pulled in 6 rebounds per game and it really shows just how much he cares about being a team player.

Eric Bresett - 6'8" Center, Elmira, NY, Corning Community College

This Elmira, NY native was the starting center for the Elmira Bulldogs last season while posting averages of 9.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.  Prior to joining the Elmira Bulldogs Eric was the starting center for Corning Community College where he earned 1st team all-conference honors and 2nd team all-region honors after averaging 18.6 points and 7.0 rebounds on the season.

Coaches Comment -  While 9.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game are decent numbers for any Center in the EBA, what many fans may not realize is how much progress Eric made from the start of the season to the end of the season.  Eric was by far the top performing Center at the 2009 EBA Final 4 down in Harrisburg, PA.   In the semi-finals  Eric dominated the favored Washington (DC) Madness scoring 20 points to go along with 8 rebounds to help the Elmira Bulldogs advance to the title game.  In the title game he got off to a even hotter start then the night before scoring 9 points early on in the 1st quarter of the game before suffering a hip injury which only allowed him to play limited minutes with, before finishing with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Kenny Gethers - 6'4" Small Forward, Syracuse, NY, R.I.T.

Kenny started the season coming off the bench before quickly working his way into the starting line-up.  Kenny averaged 10.3 points per game while leading the Elmira Bulldogs in rebounding at 9.9 rebounds per game despite standing a very generous 6'4".  Kenny was the only Elmira Bulldogs player to earn EBA player of the week honors in a 126-89 pounding of the Cincinnati Century after he scored 30 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out 7 assists, grabbed 4 steals and even blocked 3 shots in a all-around dominating performance that will most likley never be duplicated on the minor league basketball scene again.   Prior to joining the Elmira Bulldogs Kenny was a two-time all conference selection at NCAA D-3 power R.I.T. where he averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds per contest.

Coaches Comment -  Every time I think of Kenny I think back to that game against Cincinnati, I have never in my life seen a player in the zone like Kenny Gethers was that night.

Brandon Lawley - 6'7", Power Forward, Queens, NY, Mansfield University

Brandon Lawley will be back for his 3rd consecutive season with the Elmira Bulldogs.  Brandon started every game last season, teaming up with Elmira native Eric Bresset down in the post.  Lawley averaged 6.4 points and finished 2nd on the team in rebounding with a 9.5 rebounds per game average.  Prior to joining the Elmira Bulldogs Brandon was a star player at NCAA D-2 Mansfield University where he averaged 8 points and 9 rebounds per contest.

Coaches Comment - Brandon is a very hard worker who always gives 110%, he has been with us every season in Elmira, NY and the fans really love his loyalty.

Demaija Stewart - 6'7", Power Forward, London England, St. Leo University

Demaija was a hard worker on the defensive end who posted season averages of 5.6 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game and a team high 2.9 blocks per game which was good for 2nd in the entire league.  Prior to joining the Elmira Bulldogs Demiaja played for several years professionaly in the British Basketball League (BBL).  Prior to going pro he averaged 7.2 points and 7.0 rebounds at NCAA D-2 St. Leo University.

Coaches Comment - Demaija is an exceptional shot blocker who loves to come up from behind an opposing player on the fast break and pin his lay-up to the glass, it was this move that made him a huge hit with the fans.

Brian Jackson - 6'1", Point Guard, Rochester, NY, Mountain State University

Brian Jackson is one of two current new editions to the Elmira Bulldogs for the 2009-2010 season.  Brian last played professionaly in 2007-2008 in the ABA for the now defunct Syracuse Raging Bullz where he started at point guard averaging 18.6 points and 10.1 assists per contest.  Brian Jackson was then selected in the first round of the 2008 Premier Basketball League (PBL) draft with the 12th selection by the Rochester Razorsharks.   Prior to turning pro Jackson played at Genesee Community College where he averaged 18.5 points per game and 8.7 assists per game before moving onto NAIA D-1 national power house Mountain State University.  Jackson was the starting point guard for both of his seasons at Mountain State while leading them to an elite eight appearance in his junior season followed bye a trip to the sweet sixteen his senior season.   Jackson averaged 6.5 points per game and 7.7 assists per game at Mountain State University and also recorded 16 assists in a single game which is 4th all-time in Mountain State University history.

Coaches Comment - Brian Jackson has been a top level point guard at every level, college and professionaly.  He is the pass first, ball movement type of point guard that we had been seeking and we have brought him in to lead us to a championship.

Darnell Jackson - 6'7", Small Forward, York, PA, Daemen College

Darnell Jackson is the other new player to sign so far and is a former D-2 2nd team all-american from Daemen College where he averaged 18 points and 7 rebounds per contest, Darnell was also named conference player of the year while at Daemen College.  If the name sounds familiar it is because he played in Corning, NY in the ABA for the Corning Bulldogs for 6 games in November of 2007.  While playing for the Corning Bulldogs he averaged 18.5 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, 3.5 steals per game and 2.4 assists per contest.  Prior to playing for the Corning Bulldogs he played professionaly overseas for Roma St. Vincents in the Irish Super League where he averaged 17.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.

Coaches Comment - Having coached Darnell before I can honestly say that we are very, very lucky to be blessed with his talent here in Elmira.  He is a guy who can go out and get you 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 or 4 steals every night and at 6'7" his 3-point shooting ability and quick first step makes him a nightmare for opposing defenses.

ELMIRA BULLDOGS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AT FIRST ARENA THURSDAY JULY 30TH !!!!!

elmiralogo.jpg

The Elmira Bulldogs of the Eastern Basketball Alliance (EBA) will be holding a press conference tommorow afternoon Thursday July 30 at 1:00pm from The First Arena in Elmira, NY.  The Elmira Bulldogs will be announcing the names of six player's who will be making up the 2009-2010 Elmira Bulldogs roster.  The Elmira Bulldogs plan on fielding a 10-man roster with the other four names coming at a later date.

Out of the six player's whom will be announced at tommorow's press conference four will be returning player's from last season's (10-2) league champion runner up's.  The other two player's will be sure to make a huge impact with one being a former starting point guard from NAIA D-1 national powerhouse Mountain State University.  While at Mountain State University this player led his team to the NAIA D-1 Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen while dishing out as many as 16 assists in one game good for 4th all-time in school history.  The other new aquistion is certainly no slouch either as this player is a former D-2 All-American who has already been very productive playing overseas.

"We have a great overall record in Elmira (21-6) with back to back championship game appearences." Stated Bulldogs Head Coach James R. Schutz. The team's record combined with the national exposure we have recieved for having Dennis Rodman coaching the team in February at The First Arena has played a huge part in picking up these two new player's of exceptional talent as well as bringing quality player’s from last seasons team back."

Tickets to see NBA Legend Dennis Rodman's coaching debut for the Elmira Bulldogs go on sale Monday August 3rd at 10:00am at The First Arena box office and at all ticket-master locations nation-wide.
