Elmira
N.Y. - Dennis Rodman remained undefeated as a coach with the Elmira
Bulldogs' 105-103 win over the New York Wizards Saturday.
"It was
good, man," Rodman said about the weekend. "No technical fouls, no
head-butting the referees. The guys, they played their hearts out the
last couple games and the fans that were here, they supported us."
That's
how Rodman summed up his first ever head coaching experience. He was
much more animated the second day, jumping up and down, working the
referees and, most importantly, teaching the players.
"I guess
its motivation," former Mansfield University stand-out Brandon Lawley
said about having Rodman as a coach, "I want to be just like him. I
want to be that player that a coach can call on to get this done."
Lawley
did just that, getting the game winning block with three seconds left
to preserve the lead and win. And that's something Rodman helped with
Lawley.
"It felt great," Lawley said about the block.
"Overwhelming I guess. Rodman said go get it. Stand there and be
patient and jump and block the shot and that's what I did."
This
game was also important for the Bulldogs as it gave them the lead in
the league standings. And they plan on going all the way.
"We winning this," Lawley said.
As for the lack of fans, Rodman believes that the timing was against them.
"It
goods entertainment," he said. "I think its an off weekend because of
the Valentine Day, the all-star, with everything that's going on in the
world right now. I think that people take the Valentine Day very
seriously spend more money on their loved ones."
The former Bull was also a little suspicious of the refereeing.
"Those calls, man," Rodman said. "What was up with that. Those guys are playing their hearts out."
"They
got a good grasp of what I was trying to teach them," he added. "In the
short time I've been here I was trying to tell them the fundamentals,
mostly on defense, like sliding, do this, do that."
Rodman also gave them moral support.
"And
sometimes guys that are playing this type of an environment in this
league they'll get frustrated," he said. "I just tell guys keep going,
keep going."
However, Rodman has no illusions of grandeur of being on the bench.
"Its
hard all the time," he said. "I can do it part time. The guys were fun
and they understand when you get down you pick each other up."
That's what the Bulldogs did.
It
was a back and forth game all the way through but Elmira guards Haron
Hargrave and Aubin Scott took over in the fourth quarter. Hargrave had
12 while Scott scored 11 to finish out the game.
Overall,
Hargrave led the way with 41 points while Scott had 26. Lawley finished
with 14, Kirk Stewart had nine, Shanod Burton added five while Kenny
Gathers and Cameron Arterburry each had four.
